Arizona Insurance and Glass Claims

Will insurance pay for a chip repair instead of replacing the windshield?

Coverage depends on the policy, while the repair-versus-replacement decision must come from a damage and vehicle assessment.

The short answer

It may, but coverage and repairability are separate questions. If you selected Arizona full-glass coverage, A.R.S. 20-264 provides no-deductible coverage for repair or replacement of covered safety equipment. With ordinary comprehensive coverage, a deductible or other policy terms may apply.

Whether a chip or crack should be repaired must be based on a technician's inspection, the damage's type, depth, size and location, and any vehicle-manufacturer restrictions. The current ANSI repair standard permits some cracks up to 14 inches, but excludes conditions such as stress cracks, inner-layer damage, contamination that cannot be cleaned and certain damage in the driver's primary viewing area or near value-added features. A 14-inch crack is therefore potentially repairable, not automatically repairable. Arizona also prohibits knowingly performing work substantially beyond what is necessary to return the vehicle to a safe pre-damage condition.
