ADAS recalibration is the vehicle-specific process used to return affected cameras, sensors and related computers to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications. Arizona law defines recalibration as instructing the system to readjust targeted cameras, sensors and other technology so it functions properly according to those specifications. Windshield-mounted cameras may support forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane keeping, traffic-sign recognition or automatic high beams.
Recalibration is not simply clearing a warning light, disconnecting the battery or performing a general diagnostic scan. The required procedure can involve precision targets, measurements, software, a road drive under specified conditions or a combination of methods. Exact steps depend on the year, make, model, trim, equipment and current manufacturer service information. Even after a successful calibration, ADAS remains driver assistance; NHTSA says the driver must stay engaged and responsible for operating the vehicle.
