How should I care for a newly replaced windshield?

The installer’s written adhesive-specific instructions control when to drive, wash the vehicle, remove tape and resume normal use.

The short answer

Follow the written instructions provided for the actual adhesive system and installation. Do not drive until the stated minimum drive-away time has passed. That time varies with the adhesive, temperature, humidity, airbag configuration and other documented factors; it is not the same as full adhesive cure. Leave retention tape or temporary supports in place for the period specified by the installer, and do not pull on moldings or press around the glass edge.

Car-wash and high-pressure-water guidance also varies by product. Sika, for example, publishes system-specific aftercare rather than one rule for every installation. Ask when hand washing, an automatic wash or pressure washing is allowed for your job. Keep the dashboard area clear enough to notice a leak, and use reasonable care when closing doors or traveling over severe road surfaces during the initial period if the installer instructs it. Before leaving, obtain the drive-away time, calibration result if applicable, itemized invoice, glass and adhesive information, warranty terms and a contact number. If any instruction is unclear, call the shop rather than substituting a general online timetable.
