Windshield Replacement and Glass Selection

How long must I wait before driving after windshield replacement?

Minimum drive-away time is installation-specific, so a universal 30- or 60-minute answer is not reliable.

The short answer

Follow the release time given for your exact installation. AGRSS defines minimum drive-away time as the time an adhesive system needs to reach the minimum strength specified for the relevant windshield-retention requirements. The calculation can depend on adhesive product, temperature, humidity, vehicle configuration, airbag system, glass size and other installation conditions.

AGRSS calls for the owner or operator to be advised of the applicable minimum drive-away time before and after installation. The standard also requires current adhesive-manufacturer charts and adverse-weather procedures. Phoenix heat does not justify guessing or shortening the wait; some high-heat, low-humidity conditions can extend the stated time. Minimum drive-away time is not necessarily full chemical cure. It is the earliest documented time the vehicle may be released under the circumstances. Keep the vehicle stationary until then and ask for the exact clock time if the instruction is unclear.
