The short answer
The small etched marking near the edge of automotive glass is a traceability and certification label. NHTSA explains that replacement glazing is marked with an AS designation and item number, a manufacturer model or construction identifier, a distinctive designation or trademark, the letters DOT, and a NHTSA-assigned code for the prime glazing manufacturer. The DOT code identifies the company that fabricated, laminated or tempered the glass.
These markings mean the manufacturer is certifying the glazing for the applicable FMVSS 205 classification. They do not mean the Department of Transportation individually inspected that specific windshield, and a DOT number alone does not prove the part is correct for a particular VIN, camera, head-up display, sensor or trim package. AGRSS requires glass parts to be traceable to an installation by DOT number and part number. Retain the invoice with the glass and adhesive information for later fit, defect or recall questions.
