Windshield Replacement and Glass Selection

What should happen during a safety-focused windshield replacement?

A proper replacement combines vehicle assessment, correct parts and adhesive, controlled installation, system checks and release instructions.

The short answer

A safety-focused replacement begins with a vehicle assessment. AGRSS says installation should not proceed when a discovered condition could compromise the glass-retention system unless the issue is appropriately resolved. The technician should identify the correct FMVSS 205-compliant glass, determine whether ADAS could require recalibration, and select an OEM-approved or documented equivalent retention system.

During installation, the vehicle is protected, damaged glass is removed and the bonding area is prepared without harming sound original surfaces. Current adhesive-manufacturer instructions control storage, primers, application, temperature and humidity limits, bead configuration and minimum drive-away time. Expired products should not be used, and adhesive and glass identifiers should remain traceable. After setting the glass, disturbed moldings, clips, connectors, mirror hardware, cameras, sensors and wipers are checked as applicable. Required initialization or calibration follows manufacturer-compatible procedures, and the customer receives vehicle-specific release and aftercare instructions.
