Windshield Replacement and Glass Selection

Is an OEM windshield always required, or can aftermarket glass be appropriate?

Compliant aftermarket glass may be appropriate, but the part must match the vehicle's design, features and manufacturer procedures.

The short answer

An OEM logo is not the only indicator of legally compliant replacement glass. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205 requires replacement glazing to meet the applicable glazing requirements, and AGRSS calls for glass meeting the ANSI Z26.1 requirements incorporated into that federal standard. Arizona's ADAS law does not universally require OEM glass either.

That does not make every aftermarket windshield interchangeable with the original. Curvature, thickness, tint, acoustic construction, head-up-display design, camera brackets, sensor windows, heating elements and antennas can affect fit or function. AGRSS requires glass compatible with ADAS that may be affected, and current vehicle-manufacturer procedures should be consulted. Ask the provider to identify the proposed manufacturer and part, confirm required markings, verify every feature using the VIN, and explain whether the automaker specifies an OEM part for that application. The safest choice is vehicle-specific, not a blanket claim that one label is always superior.
