The short answer
Arizona MVD may issue a tint exemption to a person who must be shielded from direct sunlight for medical reasons. The application requires medical certification from an eligible Arizona-licensed professional. MVD's current guidance lists a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Naturopathic Medical Doctor or ophthalmologist. The exemption can apply to vehicles the person owns and vehicles in which the person is a regular passenger.
Submit the current Application for Window Tint Medical Exemption to MVD's Medical Review Program and wait for its determination before ordering nonstandard tint. MVD says a certificate must be carried in each vehicle the applicant owns. The statute's exemption language specifically addresses altered color or reduced light through side or rear windows, so it should not be treated as blanket permission for unrestricted windshield tint. The authorization, any conditions on it and the current MVD instructions control the installation. Give the installer a copy to review and keep the required certificate in the vehicle. A doctor's recommendation alone is not the state-issued exemption, and approval for one person or vehicle should not be assumed to transfer to someone else.
